Porthleven Town Council has given its backing to the development of a 120-space car park and industrial buildings on the outskirts of the village – but with a long list of conditions.

Trevor Osborne met with councillors last week to give more detail on his development plans for land at Tolponds Road.

He said he hoped the public car park would be “one of the first steps to help alleviate traffic problems in the village.”

The entrance would be at Tolponds, with an exit almost opposite the cricket club, and he acknowledged that he “might have to put a footpath on the opposite side.”

While not part of the application, he was also looking at installing bicycles that could be removed from their stands for £1, which would then be recovered at separate pick up/drop off point in the village.

In addition to the car park, there would also be parking for new adjacent industrial units – one of which would include a covered children’s play area, which he would like to find a nursery to take on.

“There’s quite a large number of people that would like to be in Porthleven but there’s no buildings,” said Mr Osborne.

He confirmed the facilities would include water and electric, including electric car plugs, and expected land to be available in the winter if boat storage was required.

Mr Osborne said he would landscape the area – which include sustainable drainage systems to “absorb any flood risk” – adding: “I don’t want them to look like a factory. I don’t want people to get out their car and think, ‘I’m in an industrial estate’.”
