Easter Bank Holiday proved to be a bit of washout this year, with Saturday only seeing "nice weather for ducks" according to the chairman of Porthleven Community Group.

Happily this was perfect for the job at hand: celebrating the group's 2018 Porthleven Duck Race.

A warning had already gone out to everyone attending to wear their wellies, with the grass on the Moors almost as wet as the river used for the duck racing.

Despite the difficulties plenty of people turned out to launch their handmade decorated ducks, many of which were created at a preparation event the previous week at the Public Hall.

Rob John, community group chairman, said: "It was a fantastic day, when you think about what the weather was like. It was nice weather for ducks.

"A lovely crowd came for the duck race. The whole idea is to just have a bit of fun for the kids."

Porthleven mayor Andrew Wallis was on hand to give out the prizes to the winners of the children's race and adults' race, plus to the owner of the duck judged "best dressed" - which this year was a unicorn inspired duck made by Annabelle.

There was also a charity race, involving sponsored yellow plastic ducks, which this year was held in aid of Cornwall Air Ambulance. When the proceeds of this were added to an auction of special ducks created by Tim Pryke - which included an Elvis duck and mayoral duck - a total of £220 was raised for the charity.

A spokesperson for the group said afterwards: "I don't think we've ever had such a determined battle over the auctioned ducks."

The next event organised by Porthleven Community Group will be the Big Lunch, taking place on the Moors on Sunday, June 3. People can take along their lunch to enjoy outside with others from the village, with the aim of bringing the community together.
