Runners in Helston have joined together en masse in tribute to the London Marathon competitor who collapsed and died just a few miles from the finish line.

Hayle Runners completed 3.7 miles at the Penrose Park Run on Sunday to honour Matt Campbell.

The club was joined by Matt’s uncle Steve and cousin Zac for the run. Steve told the runners that they had come to Cornwall to Sennen Beach, one of Matt's favourite places, so thought it would be fitting to do a #MilesForMatt in Cornwall.

Andy Moore, of Hayle Runners, said: "Steve also said that the entire family was getting great comfort from the outpouring towards Matt, especially the #MilesForMatt campaign which has helped both lift spirits and put a huge amount of money to the Brathay Trust that will help underprivileged kids."

Matt was running his first London Marathon to raise money for the Brathay Trust, in memory of his dad Martin who worked for the charity for eight years before his sudden death 18 months ago, when tragically the young chef collapsed and died just 3.7 miles from the finish line.

Now runners and walkers up and down the country are completing their own 3.7 mile runs in his memory, under the hashtag #MilesForMatt, and donating to his chosen charity.

People can still donate money to Matt's Just Giving page justgiving.com/fundraising/mattcampbell-londonmarathon, where the total currently stands at more than £322,000.

* Members of Falmouth Road Runners also ran from their clubhouse around Pendennis Headland on Saturday in memory of Matt.
The runners, one of many groups across the country holding similar events, were featured on ITV Westcountry news and included several who had themselves competed in the Marathon including "Hoby" (wearing black T shirt), a blind runner who joined them as a guest.
