What do you get when you take Doctor Who, an ex Radio 1 DJ and a Eurovision act from the 1990s and send them down the river in a gig? The answer: TV gold, made right on the Helford.

This was the "surreal" situation some members of Helford River Gig Club found themselves in on a sunny morning last Thursday, when they were joined by the sixth Doctor Who Colin and DJ Tony Blackburn for an unusual training session.

Also taking part were singer Sonia, Coronation Street actress turned Loose Women panellist Sherrie Hewson and another mystery celebrity.

They were being filmed as part of new Channel 5 series Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning, due to air later this year. It is the latest of the Celebrity 5 Go... series, which has previously seen celebrities in a motorhome and barge.

After meeting at Helford Passage they walked to the beach Pedn Billy, where the club stores its gig of the same name, and they were joined by a crew from Mevagissey.

Helford Gig Club secretary Nic Wilson told the Packet: "All five of them had a go at it. We put two of the celebs in each, Sherrie sat in the front and of we went.

"Colin Baker and Tony Blackburn really got into the swing of it and really seemed to enjoy it.

"It was good fun and it hopefully showed off all the things on the river."

The episode filmed at the Helford is due to air as the last in the series and will also include the celebrities "meeting some witches" in West Cornwall.
