Move to ban plastic bags from town

Plastic bags littering hedgerows in Helston could be a thing of the past, if a campaign by the Lizard peninsula Friends of the Earth proves a success.

The environmental group is hoping Helston will follow in the footsteps of Modbury in Devon by becoming a plastic bag free zone.

The campaign is due to be officially launched next month, but ahead of the launch the Friends have been working with "eco-warrior" students from Helston Community College on a slogan and design for a cotton shopping bag.

Members of the group who judged the entries submitted by the students were unable to pick out one overall winner and instead chose elements from five different designs to print on the bag.

The five finalists were Emma Winder, Alex Freeman, Caitlin Strike, Jess Eddy and Alice Cass.

Diana Wilson, from the Friends of the Earth, said she was delighted with the standard of entries and ideas put forward.

"It indicates the concern and commitment of students to improving the environment both locally and globally," she added.

The cotton bags will be available for purchase from shops in Helston after the official launch of the campaign on November 20.

*The cotton bag campaign is just one of a series of activities being undertaken by students at Helston Community College in a bid to win a bronze eco-schools award.

Eco-warrior students have also completed an environmental review of the school, surveying such issues as litter, energy and water use and transport, as well as heading a poster campaign aimed at reducing littering.
