Helston ShelterBox holding open day

Anyone who has seen images of ShelterBox’s green boxes being delivered to earthquake-struck Haiti can now see for themselves the work that goes on behind the scenes at the Helston aid charity’s headquarters.

ShelterBox is opening up the doors of its warehouse on the Water-ma-Trout industrial estate this Saturday for an open day, as part of the charity’s tenth anniversary celebrations this year.

From the administrative team that handles donations, to the logistics department that distributes the aid, ShelterBox staff and volunteers will be on hand to meet visitors and explain how the charity provides emergency shelter to those affected by disasters all over the world.

Guests will be able to find how boxes are packed with a step-by-step guide, while hearing about how stock that is kept on standby in different countries around the world, to speed up the distribution process when disaster strikes.

There will be talks on how donations can be tracked via box numbers and how aid gets to different countries.

Visitors will also have a chance to speak to ShelterBox response team members who have been sent out to recent disasters and hear a talk about the box and its contents, which are regularly updated to meet the changing needs in disaster zones.

Finally, there will be information on how to become a ShelterBox volunteer and activities to get children involved.

Tom Henderson, ShelterBox’s founder, said: “We hope as many people from the local community and beyond will come and see us and find out how we are able to play such a vital role in providing emergency shelter to those in Haiti and thousands of others in disasters all over the world.”

The ShelterBox warehouse in Unit 1A, Water-ma-Trout, will be open to the public from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, February 13. Entrance is free and there is no need to book. For information call 569782.
