Pub swashbucklers from the ‘Atlantibbean’
1:30pm Friday 1st June 2012 in Helston
Forget the pirates of the Caribbean – swashbucklers from the ‘Atlantibbean’ are the new boys (and girls) on the deck and they were out in force in Porthleven on Saturday.
The Atlantic Inn held a themed night to raise spirits and bring the community together.
Fancy dress was demanded, leading to some colourful and creative costumes on show.
Prize for the best outfit went to Stephen Nicholas – known to locals as “Bubbles” – who dressed as a modern day pirate from Somalia.
In second place was Paul Williams, dressing up as Davey Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Pub landlady Leigh Santi said: “It went really, really well. It was just a village get together and a good knees up was had by one and all.”
Regular customers had been talking about holding an event to distract people from “the doom and gloom”.
When Leigh received a phone call from the band The Sex Pirates, who used to be based in Helston and were in the area for a wedding, everything “clicked into place.”
The band agreed to perform at a discounted rate and villagers turned out in force to dance the night away.
Christine Hosey, who was among the team of organisers, said: “'Pirates of the Atlantibbean' night was a huge success. The pub was absolutely packed solid.”
