An art and design teacher from Helston Community College has launched a new radio |Show on Falmouth’s Source |FM.

S-J Marsden fronts The Funkin’ Art Radio Show, a contemporary art, design and craft radio show, talking to Cornish makers and curators, art lovers, dealers and collectors every Saturday from 11am.

Lizzie Waddling, her roving reporter and fellow redhead, calls in each week from a mystery location, and the listeners have to guess her whereabouts from verbal and musical clues before she reveals all.

Locations so far have included Kestle Barton and the Leech Pottery in St Ives, where Lizzie has interviewed curators and contributing artists.

Interviewees lined up for |S-J’s future shows include Tim Shaw, Paul Wadsworth and John Raynes.

S-J said: “Cornwall is a county incredibly rich in exciting contemporary visual arts and no-one is talking about it on the radio.

“I want the show to be a useful resource, promoting makers and exhibitions, helping people to invest in local art and letting |people know what’s on, as well as engaging listeners with relevant debate and discussion.”

She added that these were “exciting times” for the visual arts in the county, with places like The Fish Factory in Falmouth and CMR in Redruth supporting and showcasing contemporary art, craft and design.

“More people need to know about them, which is where I come in,” she said.

As well as cramming in plenty of chat the show plays tracks selected by the artists and S-J’s favourite funk, souls and disco tunes.

Listeners can tune in every Saturday from 11am to noon on The Source 96.1FM or stream it live through the station’s website on a laptop or phone.
