Two shouts for Lizard lifeboat
10:00am Thursday 16th August 2012 in Helston
The Lizard lifeboat was launched twice in the last week after two vessels needed towing to shore.
First, on Wednesday evening last week, an 18 foot fishing vessel with one person onboard contacted Falmouth Coastguard reporting it had fouled its propeller just off Church Cove, Gunwalloe.
The volunteer lifeboat crew launched just before 10pm and took the vessel in tow back to Porthleven. Conditions were quite testing as it became very foggy and the lifeboat had to work close inshore.
Then, on Sunday night just before midnight the crew were again launched this time to a 38 foot yacht with five people onboard between Kilcobben Cove and Cadgwith that was at anchor and had lost its rudder.
The yacht was returning to Brixham from the Isles of Scilly. The Lizard fulltime mechanic Dan Atkinson was put aboard the yacht and set up a towline. The yacht was then towed to Falmouth. The lifeboat returned to station at 3:30am.
