Staff and students at Helston Community College are celebrating a 100 per cent pass rate in A-level exams this year.

Of the students taking exams this year, 14 per cent achieved the highest grade of A* in at least one qualification.

Overall the average A-level grade for the college is midway between a B and a C.

The vast majority of students met or exceeded their target grades and there were some superb individual performances, including Jenny Greet who receive an A* in psychology, A* in PE and A in biology. She will read physiotherapy at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Thistle Dalton received A* grades in fine art and philosophy and A in psychology, while Tamsyn Woodman achieved A*s in English literature and PE, and A grades in chemistry and history. Tamsyn will read English at Oxford University.

Another student of note was Katya Smirnova, who despite only moving to the UK six years ago from Russia – knowing only limited English – received A* in maths, B in history and B in English language and literature.

It was not just the girls doing well, however. Top performing student overall was Max Irwin with A* grades in maths further maths and chemistry, and an A in physics.

James Dunn was received an A* in maths, A grades in physics and chemistry and a B in biology. He will read chemical engineering at the University of Bath.

Headteacher Dr Pat McGovern said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the results again.”
