Helston council to discuss controversial Lowertown homes bid

A contentious bid to build eight homes on the outskirts of Lowertown will be discussed by Helston’s town councillors today, Thursday.
As previously reported by the Packet, Sarah Puckey, Mark Heims and Mr D Towler have applied for planning permission to build four single-storey affordable homes and four two-storey open market houses adjacent to Granite Court, and create vehicle access.
Three of the open market houses would be lived in by the applicants.
Not everyone is in support of the development, with the Lowertown Community Group leading a campaign against it that has the backing of residents in the village and the Gwarth An Drae estate on the Helston side. By yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon Cornwall Council ’s website registered 65 comments – 62 of which were negative, with one neutral and two in support.
Mike Hales, chairman of the Lowertown Community Group, claimed: “This scheme desecrates greenbelt land separating Helston from Lowertown, it towers over the village, it would add to flooding problems and it would create a desperately unsafe access on a narrow lane”
It will be considered by Helston Town Council’s planning committee this evening, at 6.15pm, before Cornwall Council is expected to make the final decision on October 18.
