WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: This month, six visitors were welcomed to the meeting by Julie Hadwin who took the chair in the absence of both the president and vice-president. Mary Johnston reported on her recent visit to the annual council meeting in Truro which she had found most interesting, particularly the person who spoke about St Petrocs – a charity supporting homeless people in the area. Two members were interested in attending a meeting in February “On with the Show” when they will be given tips on what judges are looking for from entries to competitions such as at the Royal Cornwall Show. Arrangements were made for the December meeting which will be a party at the home of institute president Fay Iliffe. The visitors were invited to attend – an opportunity to get to know the members and hopefully want to join the WI. There followed an Indian cookery demonstration by local resident Gita Gates, a lady who comes from Gujaret, a state in western India. She explained that the dishes are mostly vegetarian and demonstrated the cooking of one of her recipes which members were able to sample along with another dish which Gita had prepared earlier. She also made puris for her audience to sample. The competition for an arrangement of herbs was won by Margot Saul. The WI is always ready to welcome new members. Anyone interested in joining the group shold call the secretary on 01736 762334.

Crosses were laid for those listed on the memorial. Thanks were extended to William Iliffe who played the Last Post and Reveille. The service continued in the chapel where Elsie recalled some wartime stories, together with some special memories. Hymns were accompanied by Mavis Harper. A collection for the Earl Haigh Fund amounted to £87.
