Plans for a new pub in Helston have failed to win the support of town councillors.

Helston landowner David Martin is seeking planning permission to convert the former Togs clothes shop in Church Street into a public house.

Discussing the proposal at a meeting last Thursday, members of the town council's planning committee expressed concern at the potential loss of another retail premises in Helston.

They were also worried about increased levels of noise and anti-social behaviour.

Members decided to recommend refusal of the scheme and asked that, should their recommendation differ from that of the Kerrier district council planning officer, the application be referred to the Kerrier planning committee for a decision.

The town council recommendation stated: "Members objected to the continued loss of retail space in the town and were of the opinion that the proposal would be detrimental to the residential amenity of the neighbouring properties due to increased levels of noise and anti-social behaviour."

Members also felt the development would not be in keeping with other premises in the town and use of the proposed veranda at the front of the property could be intimidating to members of the public and potentially dangerous.
