WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The talk in October at an Open Meeting was on "the Lifeboat", an important subject for those in West Cornwall who all live near the sea, and have connections with its history. The speaker was Mike Sagar-Fenton from Penzance, who works tirelessly as a supporter of the Penlee lifeboat, based between Penzance and Newlyn. This was an entertaining and revealing talk on a subject on which Mike is an authority, having written several books on the area, and experienced life at sea for himself. He was a good raconteur, and told several stories about lifeboats and rescues, some sad some amusing. The Penlee station was one of the earliest opened in Britain. He also spoke of fundraising for lifeboats and how Cornwall is very good at supporting the charity. Leedstown WI has raised some extra funding to give him.

The next Open Meeting is on Tuesday, November 11 at 2.15pm in Leedstown Methodist Sunday School, when the popular local speaker, Russell Holt will return to talk about further travels and adventures in his green van. He has travelled widely and is an entertaining speaker. Visitors are charged £3.50 to cover tea and biscuits and the talk and are very welcome.
