The August meeting was held in Mawgan Recreation Hall. President, Dot Rogers, welcomed members and several visitors.

She also thanked her WI friends who helped her in many practical ways during her recent illness. It was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations were expressed to our exhibition team for their success in winning the cup at Stithians Show and for the complimentary comments from the judges. The planned walk at Penare had to be cancelled but was replaced by one at Trelowarren, which was enjoyed. These walks are proving to be very popular. Four members attended a two-day course on flower arranging which was very enjoyable and instructive. Several other future events were discussed and arranged.

It was then a pleasure to welcome a familiar friend, Gill Keeble, to talk and demonstrate what is meant by “five a day”, which is what is recommended we eat daily. She explained the amounts and varieties that go towards the “five a day”, but it does not include potatoes which was rather a surprise. She proceeded to make at least six dishes which included a summer pudding, a courgette, tomato and rice Tian, couscous with vegetables, an Ainsley Herriot recipe called Sidney’s Smoothie, a Ratatouille, and a beetroot and orange dish. All the dishes can be adapted to cater for a person’s preferences in taste, and should each give you the “five a day” needed. We were then allowed to taste all the dishes which were really delicious. So many different flavours both sweet and savoury which I am sure members will be anxious to try for themselves. Gill was warmly thanked for a fascinating demonstration with such tasty results.

Supper was taken provided by Beryl and Elaine Lane. The winners of the competition: 1, Helen Dudman; 2, Sue Barnes; 3, Sheila Dark. Flower of the month: 1, Gillian Rose; 2, Kathleen Worden; 3, Sue Barnes/Helen Dudman.

The September meeting will be a talk and demonstration of Tai-Chi by Rachel Simpson. Any lady who would like to join us will be made most welcome. Any information required to our secretary Dot Spragg on 01326 221127.
