Gunwalloe Women's Institute

11:21am Tuesday 7th February 2012

The February meeting took place at Mawgan Recreation Hall. President, Mary Ferris, welcomed members and echoed the 12 members opinions regarding the excellent dinner they shared at Mullion Golf Club last month. Thank you letters had been received from Little Harbour and Josh Jones for the donations we sent to them and Elaine Lane was congratulated on raising £1000 for Little Harbour from various activities she and friends carried out.

With regard to the Royal Cornwall Show, it has been requested that all Cornwall WIs produce a pennant to be displayed around the WI marquee. Dot Rogers produced a design which was approved and which now awaits making. Also, with the theme “Jubilee” all WIs are requested to take four letters from the word and make items from the suggested list. Thoughts on the items were discussed, decisions to be made later. Members were chosen to attend the Spring Countdown meeting to be held at the Hall for Cornwall in April. The County News was read through showing so many activities available for members in which to participate With the domestic business dealt with it was a pleasure to welcome Margaret and Nigel Hopkins and Vanda Trotman to talk about U3A (University of the Third Age). Margaret explained that she went to the Carrick U3A group originally but found the travelling to much and so with Vanda they proposed to try to set up a group in Helston. They found a venue and advertised the meeting and just hoped they would have more than a couple of people interested. The day dawned and they were overwhelmed by the response. So there was obviously a need. Nigel showed on a screen the many photographs taken at the different events that have taken place including trips to many interesting places, lunches, walking parties and crafts etc. The Helston group started in 2009 and at the moment has 231 members. The classes and activities available are so diverse, something for everyone, they even have a group learning Latin and others taking Spanish to GCSE level. The group meet at Helston Methodist Church on the third Wednesday of every month, but many of the different groups meet in each other’s homes. I am sure that Margaret and Vandas’ enthusiasm will encourage many more people to join and to enjoy new experiences with like-minded people, including some of tonight’s audience.

Competition winners: 1,Sheila Hocking; 2, Dot Spragg; 3, Sue Barnes. Flower of the month: 1, Dot Rogers; 2, Dot Spragg; 3, Sue Barnes/Mary Wood. Hostesses for the evening were Dot Rogers and Beryl Lane.

The next meeting will be the General Meeting on March 7. All ladies interested will be made most welcome. Any information required can be obtained from Secretary Dot Spragg on 01326 221127.
