WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: An extract of a Cornish Lady – An Italian Interlude was the subject of a talk by Lesley Robinson. The diary was supposedly written by Catherine Trefern of Trefew telling how she met this maiden aunt and they sewed a patchwork quilt together and eventually Catherine went back to Bath with the aunt to look after her. When she passed away Catherine was astonished to learn that she had inherited the house and her money. Following this Catherine’s sister died and Catherine looked after her frail niece, Abigail, and when she was old enough they travelled to Italy to stay with a friend, Elizabeth, and met fellow Cornishwoman Caroline Trevelyan and learnt all about her life in Italy. It wasn’t until the end of the talk that members realised the story was the work of Lesley and that the story evolved from a painting that she had bought some years ago off an old lady and a younger one making a patchwork quilt. Members now have to wait until the next saga of this story is written to find out what happened next!

Tricia Monks, vice president, thanked Lesley for a very interesting talk.
