The November meeting was well attended. Before the monthly business was discussed members observed one minutes silence for Christine Stanton, a loyal member for many years who recently died.

After the business was discussed, the speaker, Russell Holt, was welcomed; the topic of his talk was Cities of the World. The first slides showed the impressive architecture of Manchester in the 1950s to present date.

We then travelled to Bath, a beautiful Georgian City and saw the magnificent architecture of both Lansdown and Royal Crescent.

Next on a whistle stop tour, we were transported to St Petersburg, with its canals and we saw the Winter Palace, the War Memorial, with the eternal flame and the marvellous parquet floor in the Summer Palace.

Next it was Prague seeing some of its magnificent buildings, some that had been cleaned, others yet to be cleaned of the grime of previous decades.

We were then whisked off to beautiful Venice with shots of the Grand Canal, St Marks, The Bridge of Sighs and many more well known sites.

We proceeded around the world and saw beautiful Florence, Rome and Beijing and Tiananmen Square well known for the protests and massacre that occurred there in 1989. Then on to Hong Kong with its skyscrapers – and we saw pictures of people praying and burning incense in the streets.

We were then transported to fantastic Sydney with the iconic Opera House and of course the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Then to the African continent and a view of Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain.

Our last foreign city was San Francisco with its steep streets and trams. It was an exhilarating trip, but soon we were back in the UK in London with more familiar views of Buckingham Palace, Smithfield Market Tower Bridge and the Thames Barrier. We finished our breathtaking adventure in Truro with a 1950s aerial view of the city – a very different city today.

It was a very enjoyable talk with lots of “oohs” and “aahs” and “I’ve been there” from members. The afternoon brought back lots of happy holiday memories. The speaker was thanked for an enjoyable afternoon by Mary Ellis.

Thanks to Rosemary who served the teas and Frances who arranged the raffle. Flower of the Month was won by Catherine; the monthly competition (postcard from abroad): 1, Catherine; 2, Betty; 3, Rita.
