Members met on October 15 in the committee room of the public hall, as the big room had been booked for another function, members, however, enjoyed the cosiness and the warmth of the room.

The meeting started with a talk on Joyce Grenfell given by Yvonne Toms, a well known and loved speaker of our WI.

Joyce Grenfell was born in 1910 and passed away in 1979, her many talents had given during her life time extreme pleasure to so many people. She was an actress (many of us I am sure can remember the St Trinians films among many others), a comedienne, a satirist, a monologist and a singer-song-writer.

Her memorial service was held in Westminster Abbey, the first time ever that such a tribute had been given to a comedian.

Mrs Toms gave a few examples of her monologues, one of them “George don’t do that” one of the best known one.

Following refreshments it was time for the business at hand. Apologies were received, minutes of the last meeting read and the treasurer report given.

Maureen, president, suggested that we as a WI should be noticed and send the WI Life Magazine news on the crafts we love doing.

Next year is our 90th anniversary and Maureen, together with the committee, is asking for members’ suggestions as to which special celebrations they would like.

Our Christmas social and lunch is being held on December 10 at The Harbour Inn, 12.30pm. We will meet at Trevena Cross nurseries for a soup and pudding lunch on January 14. A bowling evening will take place on February 18. Roy Treloar, quiz master, in the summer is asking the WI to provide a team for a quiz evening he is organizing at Wheal Dream on behalf of the Rotary Club.

Flowers of the month competition was won by Jill Walker and Chris Cottington.
