Plumes of thick black smoke filled the sky after a blaze broke out in a derelict building.

West Midlands Fire Service Crews warned people near Priory Road in Aston to keep their doors and windows closed as they tackled the fire.

Photos from the scene in Birmingham show the top of the factory unit alight with debris littering the street below.

The fire service tweeted that it was called at around 5pm on Sunday and that 12 fire engines were in attendance with around 60 firefighters.

It added: “Part of the building has collapsed, making it even more dangerous for our crews to work, and the fire’s broken through the roof.

“We’re working hard to stop it spreading to other premises.”

The fire can be seen from the Aston Expressway and Spaghetti Junction.
