Organisers of Truro Primestock Show have been left delighted by its success at the end of a difficult year for farmers.

A wet summer and autumn made for difficult conditions, but despite this both entries and standards were high.

Jim Large, general show organiser, said: “It went exceptionally well. It was a very, very successful show and the weather turned out beautifully for us. We had a lovely, sunny morning that drew the crowds out. Truro was full of people.”

He said cattle entries were “pretty well up to normal”, with 27 being judged.

While sheep numbers were down slightly, this was put down to a wet summer and autumn that would have been tough on flocks.

The domestic section entries were as normal and Mr Large was particularly pleased that despite the bad weather the entries in the farm crop classes were also as normal.

“It seems to become more and more popular with the ordinary townspeople. It’s right in the city centre – you can’t avoid it. You have got a tent full of cattle and sheep outside Marks and Spencer and we don’t charge for entry,” added Mr Large.

This year’s cattle show champion was a 674kg Limousin heifer by Ross Withers from Probus – the second year in a row his cattle has taken the championship.

This sold for £4.10/kg, a total of £2,763, to Peter Morris Butchers from St Columb.

Reserve champion performed equally well, selling at just 10p/kg less. The 680kg British Blue x Limousin steer from David and Gail Ellis of Lelant was sold to Chris Dale, butcher of Helston, for £2,720.

The champion pair of lambs title went to Nigel and Kay Barbery from near Truro, for their pair of Texel lambs that sold for an “exceptional” £215 each to Robert Trevarthen of Penryn.

Reserve lamb was by Neil Phillips from Mylor, last year’s champion shower. This year, his sold for £155 to Simon Richards of JV Richards of Perranwell Station.

This year’s show is to set to achieve national attention, after Radio 4 spent the day at the event recording for its On Your Farm programme. This is due to air on Sunday, December 23 at 6.35am.
