Trewithen Gardens near Probus are celebrating after winning four separate awards at the 2014 Cornwall Spring Flower Show.

The gardens, which have already received an award for best camellia at this year’s RHS Rosemoor Early Camellia Competition, were given The Rosemary Cobbold-Sawle Cup for their collection of ornamental trees and shrubs, The Moira Reid memorial trophy for best exhibit of variegated foliage, and The Viscountess Boyd of Merton cup for three different camellia sprays for the best exhibit in class 41.

The show garden, A Festival of Camellia, that was put together with the International Camellia Society and the three other ICS recognised Gardens of Excellence in the South West, was also awarded a Silver Gilt Medal.

Trewithen’s head gardener, Gary Long, said: “We’re thrilled to be honoured in this way.

“I’m particularly proud of the variegated foliage award as it’s the first time we have ever entered and won in this category. This year’s show included some very stiff competition, and the blooms on display were really beautiful.”

BBC presenter Chris Beardshaw, who officially opened the show, said in his speech that Cornwall is the home of the spring garden and, thanks to an exceptionally mild winter, this season’s flowers have been more colourful than usual.

Gary said: “Although some of the blooms are flowering late this year due to a general lack of sunlight over the winter, the flowers are more beautiful than ever as we’ve seen very little frost.

“As a result the Spring Flower Show was a real feast for the eyes and it was interesting to see how other gardens had been faring.”
