A platoon of Territorial Army soldiers will stay in Truro, but the rest of the company and company HQ will make the move to Devon.

MP for Truro and Falmouth, Sarah Newton has been campaigning for the soldiers to stay in Cornwall after a review recommended relocating D Company of 6 Rifles to Devon.

Following the White Paper on Reserve Forces D Company, 6th Battalion The Rifles, currently based in Truro and Plymouth, the soldiers would have moved to Plymouth and Barnstaple from 2016.

Following written representations Mrs Newton met with Mr Robathan to discuss her concerns, with a petition also raised arguing that "Cornwall’s centuries-old direct link with the Rifles and their predecessor regiments be maintained".

Mrs Newon said she was "delighted" to report that the Minister had confirmed soldiers whould be staying in the city and thanked everyone who had signed the petition.

The Ministry of Defence has said that keeping the Truro TA centre would "ensure the close links between Truro and the reserves will be maintained."

Adding: "It is very much hoped this strong recruiting ground will provide many more reserve soldiers in the future."
