Police in Truro have solved the 'mystery of the missing newspapers and bag of coins', after it was found to be a case of the wrong little red car.

Officers were initially left scratching their heads after a report of a theft from a car in the Truro area.

Two newspapers and a bag of coins were initially believed to have been taken from a small red Peugeot 107 and  officers went out to check the CCTV to see if they could spot any clues.

The footage showed the 107 park up outside a shop and the 'victim' is seen walking in and purchasing the newspapers.

A small red Toyota Aygo, which look similar to a Peugeot 107, pulls up next to the 107 and the driver of this vehicle walks into the shop.

The 'victim' then hastily puts his items into the nearest small red vehicle, which is the wrong one, and then attempts to drive off but alas...the car doesn't start.

The "victim" then aborts his mission and runs to his appointment.

The oblivious Toyota driver returns to her car to find two newspapers in her vehicle and with much bemusement returns to the shop to enquire as to the reason for them being in her vehicle- there is no obvious answer and she leaves the papers with staff.

A police spokesman said: "After viewing the CCTV we went to leave, and as luck would have it, the Toyota driver pulls up behind us.

"We spoke with the driver, who explained the mystery of the papers and she then discovered the small bag of coins in the middle section of the car. The bounty (bag of coins) was returned safely to an extremely grateful and slightly embarassed "victim".

"This shows that CCTV is vital, as without it this would not have been so funny for the victim or the Toyota driver."

Adding that the lessons learnt from today are to always secure your vehicle, that members of the public are inherently honest and that people should ensure regular trips to Specsavers.
