Truro School student Katherine Broger-Bareham has been celebrating this week after being offered the illustrious Dickson Poon Law Scholarship.

The scholarship will see Katherine study both English and German Law at King’s College’s specialist Dickson Poon School of Law in London.

In their offer letter, the representatives at King's College said: "These scholarships are reserved for the very brightest and best students who apply to study Law at King’s.”

The four year course will also give Katherine the option of studying in Germany for up to two years.

The letter added: “This is an exceptional achievement and you will be joining a small talented cohort of law students at King’s who have been recognised through the award of this prestigious scholarship."

Established for over 175 years, the law school at King’s College is one of the world’s leading faculties in the subject.

The scholarship is one of only 75 to be awarded to undergraduates nationally as part of King’s College’s recent £40 million law investment, half funded through a £20 million donation in 2012 from Mr Dickson Poon CBE, a renowned Hong Kong-based philanthropist.

The course offer has been a result of years of hard work from Katherine, combining both school studies and work experience to shape her learning in the field.

Last year Katherine did work experience in Munich where she was placed with a top family judge in Bavaria, organised as part of her A level German course at Truro School.

More recently the Sixth Form student has also completed a work experience placement Truro based law firm Penderlaw, as well as gaining experience with a criminal barrister at Truro Crown Court.

Miss Broger-Bareham said: “I learned a great deal during my summer work experience placement with Penderlaw, the team there were very friendly and I really enjoyed it.”

Originally Katherine only planned to do a one week summer placement but it quickly materialised into more.

Robin Pender, principal of Penderlaw said: “Katherine did work experience with Penderlaw Solicitors for a week in July 2014. She was so good that we took her on for the rest of the holiday! She was fantastic, mature, personable and very thorough.”

Mr Pender continued: “We are thrilled to hear that Katherine has obtained a scholarship to study law at Kings College London and we are pleased to have given her a start in law.”

When asked where she thinks she will end up, Katherine said: ‘“I hope to pursue a career in law, using my language skills to work and live abroad.”
