A total of 17 firefighters had to be called to St Agnes after a car fire fire spread to a large pile of tyres on Tuesday morning.

One crew from Perranporth was sent to Penwinnick Road at around 11am, to a car on fire at a commercial garage, but further 999 calls told the fire service that the blaze had spread to a second vehicle and a nearby pile of 40 tyres.

A fire service spokesperson said: "On updating the attending crew they reported a large plume of smoke coming from the scene crews requested three appliances attend the incident - a further two appliances with eleven firefighters were mobilised from Truro and a crew of six from the new Hayle Community Fire station were sent to gain experience."

Crews used breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one main jet from a hydrantt, while electricity to the building was isolated, and the fire was out by 12.30pm.
