Shrieks and laughter were the order of the day at Truro High School for Girls where pupils scored some of the best results of recent years. 22% of all grades achieved were A*, 56% were A* or A and 83% were A* to B. 21% of candidates got straight A*s or As.

Amongst those opening their envelopes were Amani and Naomi Hart, from Idless. Like most twins they share a special closeness and were overjoyed by the 2 A*s, 3 As, 4 Bs and C that Amani achieved and the 7A*s and 4As that Naomi got.

“I’m beyond proud,” said Susan, with tears in her eyes. “Both the girls got what they wanted and needed and are so happy. Amani is a very talented artist who will focus on that going forward and Naomi will concentrate on her academic choices.”

Amani is one of two students at the school to achieve a perfect score of 100% in her art GCSE this year. The other was Georgia Wildgoose from Falmouth.

Charlotte Oakes’ dad Nigel, from St Columb, is only too happy to start doling out the notes having promised his daughter money on a sliding scale for each of the grades she got. With 4A*s, 6As and and 1B, it’s looking like an expensive month.

“She’s exceeded all our expectations and I’m absolutely chuffed,” he said. “We’ve organized a special party to celebrate at the weekend and there will be lots of fizz.”

“I did it!” shouted Verity Williams, from Gwithian, as she unfolded her piece of paper with mum Sarah beside her. The A she got in Latin was a particular delight.

Other top students included Sophie Jones (8A*s and 3 As), Lucy Hammock (8A*s, 3As), Layla Stuart (7A*s, 4As), Juliet Richards 7A*s, 4As), Yolande Barnsley (7.5 A*s, 3As), Mary Lau (5A*s, 5As, 2Bs), Charlotte Andrew (5A*s, 5As, 1B), Sophie Donne (5A*s, 5As, 1B), Tegan Elliott (4A*s, 7As), Madeleine Hollings (4A*s, 7As), Lucy Johns (4A*s, 7As) and Emily Elwell-Deighton (3A*s, 7.5As).

“This year’s results have been better than ever and I’m extremely proud – not just of those girls who got straight A*s and As but also of the girls who had to work particularly hard to get the grades they achieved and who succeeded beyond their expectations,” said Headmaster Dr Glenn Moodie. “A good school is more than about getting excellent results – it’s about giving students the happy, productive, fun-loving environment they need to build confidence and aspiration. That’s what our parents tell us we’ve got here at Truro High and that’s why I’m even more delighted by these successes today.”

In 17 of all subjects taken including maths, biology, chemistry, physics and history, 50% or more of all candidates achieved A* or A. In textiles, 100% received A* or A, 92% in Latin and 78% in history.
