A man from Hastings is facing a possible jail sentence after admitting carrying out an acid attack which left a Truro businessman severely disfigured and blind in one eye.

On the day his trial was due to begin at Truro Crown Court, David Phillips, 49, of Barley Lane in Hastings, pleaded guilty to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent to do grievous bodily harm upon Andreas Christopheros.

The court heard that Mr Christopheros had been a victim of mistaken identity when he had sulphuric acid thrown over him on the doorstep of his home in Carrine Road last December. The attack left him critically injured with severe disfigurement of his face, body and arms. He also lost the sight in one eye and was partially blinded in the other.

Phillips was remanded in custody until October 9 when he is due to be sentenced. His wife, Nicole, was to be tried for perverting the course of justice, but her trial was halted on Monday, and the judge ruled the charge should remain on file.
