Girls currently in school years six, seven and eight are being invited to experience a day as a chorister in Truro Cathedral’s prestigious choir.

The Be a Chorister for a Day event is on Tuesday, November 10, and is aimed primarily at girls who may be considering applying to be a chorister, though it is open to all girls in the appropriate age range.

Christopher Gray, the cathedral’s director of music, said: “Our choristers all have great voices and a love of singing but there is much more to it than that. It’s an intensive routine that involves a rehearsal before school every weekday morning, and two or three public performances every week. The girls love what they do, and the benefits go well beyond the enjoyment of singing wonderful music, day in day out, in our beautiful cathedral.”

The Be a Chorister for a Day event will allow girls to rehearse with the choristers at 8.10am and then experience life at Truro School, where the girl choristers are educated. They will then come to the cathedral to find out more about life there, before rehearsing and singing evensong with the cathedral choir, including its girl choristers and adult professional singers.

Mr Gray said: “This is a rare opportunity for girls aged 11 to 13 to have a behind-the-scenes look at how our professional choir operates, and to see if a choristership might be right for them. At the very least, they are sure to have a fun and interesting day, with some singing we hope they will remember for the rest of their lives.”

The cathedral’s girl choristers are recruited from across Cornwall and beyond, but if successful they must attend Truro School where scholarships are given and means-tested bursaries are available to ensure that selection is based purely on ability. Full information is available in the brochure available on the cathedral’s website, www.trurocathedral.org.uk.

Places are free of charge but must be pre-booked by contacting Mrs Jayne Grigg, email: admissions@truroschool.com.

A similar event will be held for boys currently in school years two and three on Saturday, January 30.
