The Rev Canon Simon Griffiths has been installed as the new Head of Worship at Truro Cathedral and welcomed by the Chapter and members of the congregation.

Simon, who hails from Bridgend in South Wales, has always loved music and from an early age was part of his local church’s children’s choir. It was here that his love of music was fostered and where he began a lifelong love of choral music.

A degree in music at Christ Church College, Canterbury was followed by training for ordination at Chichester Theological College, where he was particularly interested in Biblical studies, liturgy and ethics. After an inner city curacy in Bristol, Simon spent some time as chaplain at the University of Chichester, before again ministering in a city centre parish, this time in Sheffield, which he did for ten years.

Simon said: “It was my privilege to engage with, and work with, various local authority agencies and voluntary organisations who worked with those who were homeless, suffering various addictions as well as those living with mental health issues.”

After Sheffield, Simon became Rector of Central Swansea, managing a team of clergy and laity, caring for three churches and, as St Mary’s is the civic and collegiate church of the diocese and county, preparing, hosting and fronting many special diocesan and civic services, from small intimate sad occasions held in a side chapel to enormous events attended by many hundreds of people.

The Dean of Truro, The Very Rev Roger Bush, said: “We welcome Simon to our cathedral family, knowing that he brings talents and experiences that will undoubtedly add greatly to the work of the cathedral, both within Truro and the county.”

Simon is looking forward to starting his ministry at Truro. “I am incredibly privileged and excited to become part of the cathedral team and worshipping community," he said. "I look forward to meeting everyone and to sharing our journey of faith.”
