THE organisers of Truro Carnival have announced that due to "apathy and a lack of interest" this year's procession will not go ahead.

The move follows a committee meeting at the County Arms in Truro last night.

In a statement on the organising committee's Facebook page, committee chair Claire Arymar said: "Truro City Carnival Committee 2016 are sad to announce that due to the continued apathy and lack of interest in helping organise the event, this years procession will NOT take place.

"These events need to be driven by the passion and commitment of local people/businesses/schools and unfortunately it doesn't seem to be there. The committee work hard to provide the city with a carnival but are often met with a great deal of criticism and negativity after the event so given the lack of input this year despite many appeals for help, we have decided to call it a day.

"As chair I would really like to thank everyone who has contributed, especially the groups who have taken part and made the procession great. To the committee members who have worked tirelessly to produce the past two carnivals and to Councillor Loic Rich for his continued support as both a mayor and a local councillor. Our apologies but "without you we are nothing" to quote one of the committee."
