Truro-based community radio station The Hub has announced it will close at the end of April following just under two years of broadcasting.

The directors of The Hub CIC said on Monday that, following "a challenging 18 months," they will suspend broadcasting and close down all operations, ending transmission on Sunday, April 24 at 6pm, and surrendering the FM license back to the regulator OFCOM.

The directors have decided that the company and the radio station are no longer viable, saying this is mostly due to a number of key management vacancies and on-going financial difficulties.

The station claims a coverage population of more than 160,000 people, the largest FM transmission area of any community station in the UK, and provided live broadcasts from a variety of key locations including the Boardmasters Festival and Lemon Quay in Truro.

Station manager Pete Appleyard said: “It was a difficult journey getting to the point of being on-air back in 2014, but since then we’ve become a central part of the community and established a large and loyal listener base. Whilst the team and I are saddened by the news, we’re determined to make the next few weeks all about celebrating our achievements. I’d like to say a massive thank you to our listeners, all the volunteers at The Hub who go the extra mile and in particular the volunteer management team. The 24th April will be a sad day, but I’m excited to show how much we achieved over the past few years.”
