Truro College is gearing up for the annual ROC 5K charity fun run which will take place on the evening of Tuesday June 28.

The event will start and finish at Truro’s Lemon Quay, taking in the city’s riverside and Boscawen Park.

Truro College is a major sponsor of the event, providing cash and in kind support, and many members of staff and students sign up to take part, while on race day, the college provides the PA system, warm up instructors and physios.

The event raises funds for ROC Welcome, a social club for vulnerable local people with learning disabilities based at Truro College, which is part of Robert Owen Communities, an award winning local charity.

Last year’s ROC 5K was a sell-out occasion, with 400 community spirited individuals and teams from all over the county taking part. More than £13,000 was raised for ROC and local people with learning disabilities. For 2016, the entry limit has been raised to 500. People of all abilities can run, jog or walk the scenic route. The minimum age is 11.

Cheryl Mewton, director of studies at Truro College said: "The college is delighted to support this community wide event once again this year. This is especially so because many of the college foundation studies students are members of ROC’s social club which takes place at the college every Wednesday and does so much good in building confidence and those key inter-personal skills. The ROC 5K has doubled in size since the first event in 2014 and I’m proud that the college has been involved as a major sponsor from the very beginning."

Sam Mitchell, foundation studies lecturer, said: "People with learning disabilities and essential support staff are signing up in record numbers for this year’s ROC 5K. The college foundation studies group alone is 45 strong. And on race day, people with learning disabilities will be assisting with runners’ refreshments and meeting event sponsors and partners. This is all about creating a kinder, safer and more inclusive Cornwall in which people of all abilities can flourish."

ROC’s Calvin Lovelock said: "I’m so grateful for the wonderful, multi-faceted support of the college for all that ROC seeks to do in Cornwall. The ROC 5K is a wonderful occasion in which 500 people can come together and have fun for the single purpose of showing their support for local people with learning disabilities. We are raising funds so that the people we support can increasingly enjoy the same life chances that the rest of us so often take for granted. However, if you wish to take part in the fun run, please sign up quickly – we are limited to 500 runners and places are going fast."

There are only about 50 places left in the race, and anyone wanting to register or find more information can go to www.roc-uk.org/ROC5K500
