A father and daughter from Truro chatted to the Duke of Cambridge, along with other fathers, mentors and the children they support, at a Heads Together Father’s Day breakfast.

Chris and Harriet Skidmore are campaigners with the charity YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people.

The pair spoke to the Duke of Cambridge about the Heads Together campaign, which he is spearheading with his wife and brother, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Duke wants to help dads and father figures have the confidence to talk to children and each other about their feelings.

Harriet, who has experienced severe Generalised Anxiety Disorder, told the Duke about the many ways in which her father has supported her recovery. Chris told the Duke how he had accessed his own support to help him cope while he was caring for his daughter, Harriet adding that this was "really brave."

At the breakfast in London, Chris and Harriet also took part in a Heads Together Father’s Day Challenge. The campaign is encouraging people to take the Challenge and #celebratewithconversation.

Chris said: “Harriet and I were really privileged to meet Prince William and to have the opportunity to talk with him in a personal way about the mental health; which is so clearly an issue that he cares deeply about.”

Harriet said: “The Duke had such a calm, relaxed manner and was genuinely interested in everything my dad and I had to say, it’s definitely a day I shall never forget.

"It was an honour to be part of such an important campaign to end the stigma surrounding mental health, to share the experience with my dad, and to be given the opportunity to use the horrible experience I’ve suffered in a positive way in order to help others.”
