The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity's Walk for Wards fundraiser has been declared better than ever, attracting hospital staff and supporters from the community.

Teams from the community, medical admissions unit, diagnostic and molecular pathology, ear nose and throat, Tintagel and the Phoenix Unit wound their way through hay piles, hedges, and farms before making their way to the coastal path.

The team from diagnostic and molecular pathology were inspired to walk in memory of their colleague, Joe Mathew. Team leader, Natalie Blewett, said: "He was completely dedicated to his family and also his extended work family - only the best was good enough. He worked tirelessly to support pathology providing endless research and training for all involved.”

The team have raised over £3,000 which will be used to improve services in pathology, as well as to purchase a picnic bench for staff, patients and families to enjoy breaking bread together in tribute to Joe.

Overall, 94 walkers took on a 10km challenge walk or a more gentle family walk, raising £6,000 for many areas across the Trust.

Jessica Burgess, fundraising manager for Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity, said, "I am personally overwhelmed and humbled by the participation and sponsorship walkers received this year. It is truly an honour to be a part of such a great community that want to give back to RCHT. The stories of excellent care and thoughtful staff are truly touching."
