Police are appealing for witnesses after a man drowned in the sea off the coast of Perranporth on Monday, July 25.

At approximately 3.30pm a 52-year-old man from West Yorkshire went for a swim. His family alerted coastguards when they became concerned for his welfare, and at approximately 5.30pm he was found dead on the shore.

Police said the man's post mortem appearance supported a conclusion of death by drowning, and and they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Ian Pengelly, said: “Whilst this death isn’t currently being treated as suspicious, we are appealing for witnesses. The man in question is described as being a strong swimmer and we are hoping that someone may have seen something that can help us with our enquiries.

“The man is described as being about 5’8 tall, of slim build, with mousy brown hair. He was wearing swimming shorts and his family describes him as being physically fit and a strong swimmer.

“If you were in the area at the time, and noticed anything such as seeing a man in difficulty in the water, or have information that will assist in the investigation in to the death of this man, then please get in touch.”
