The mayor of Truro, councillor Rob Nolan, is inviting warm hearted people with an eye to the past to a fundraising afternoon of merriment and nostalgia.

The The Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be event, supported by the Alverton Hotel and Barclays Bank, will be run in aid of the mayor’s charity, ROC, which supports local people with learning disabilities.

Presented and performed by Chris Batters, ace raconteur and county councillor, the show will be an interactive reflection of what everyday life used to be like in the 50s, 60s and 70s, with lots of banter and comic moments.

Mr Nolan said: "Presenting this highly popular show used to be Chris’s profession. When he became a county councillor he found he no longer had the time. However, he has kindly agreed to come out of retirement as a one off to support my charity, for which I’m most grateful. ROC is very ambitious – the aim is to fund new confidence building opportunities for the people they support which would otherwise not be possible."

Karen Hurn, from Barclays, said: "Throughout the south west, audiences used to love this show – and Chris loved doing it. We’ll have enormous fun getting those grey cells ticking as together we remember the past. The Alverton is generously allowing us the use of the hotel without charge to increase the outcome for ROC. Barclays is delighted to be associated with this special event – an afternoon of sheer enjoyment."

Calvin Lovelock, from ROC, said: "Rob, Karen and immediate past Mayor Lorrie Eathorne Gibbons have my sincere thanks for all their hard work in organizing this event for ROC. Apart from the hilarity in prospect, the show represents phenomenal value for money – from which the whole community will benefit as ROC works to create a safer, kinder and more inclusive Cornwall."

The event will take place on Sunday, October 16, from 3.30pm to 7pm. Tickets, priced at £10 including a cream tea, are available from the Town Hall on 01872 274 766 or by emailing rachael@truro.gov.uk
