The community spirited efforts of two brothers resulted in them being special guests of Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety (CFRCS) service at their local station for a day.

Harry and Charlie Stoddern from Truro got a feel of what it is like to be a firefighter when they accepted a VIP invitation from Chief Fire Officer Paul Walker which was made after he became aware of the boys' community efforts during the Cornwall Volunteers Awards.

The brothers won a Volunteer Award after being nominated for their work in picking up litter to keep their streets and amenities clean and tidy. Through Volunteer Cornwall the brothers were invited to visit Truro Community Fire Station as a reward for their efforts.

The boys' mum, Louise Reeks, said: “I am so extremely proud of Harry and Charlie and how they help their community. The boys attend Tregolls School which has also supported their volunteering work. Thank you Cornwall Fire and Rescue for their visit, the boys had a great time.”

Geoff Brown, Cornwall Council cabinet member for communities, said: “It’s important that the community spirit shown by Harry and Charlie is recognised so I’m pleased that they won an award at the Cornwall Volunteer Awards. I’m delighted that our crew at Truro Fire Station have been able to spend some time with the boys to show them the role we play in the supporting the local community.”

Mr Walker added: “Harry and Charlie’s voluntary work is an inspiration to other young people across Cornwall and their reward of spending some time with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was well deserved and our pleasure to arrange and host. I hope others are motivated to volunteer and I encourage young people to contact Volunteer Cornwall and explore the children and young people page on their website volunteercornwall.org.uk.”
