A dozen local mums are in for a treat after staff at the Victoria Inn were bowled over by the response to a recent Mother’s Day competition to win a family meal at the popular Threemilestone pub.

A Facebook competition set up by Team Vic asked friends and followers to ‘Muminate’ their mothers, telling the pub why they should be the one to win the meal. However, when the entries came flooding in, it was clear that picking just one winner wouldn’t be fair.

Landlord Mark Holden was astonished by the number of entries. “We just couldn’t believe it when we started reading the stories that were sent to us," he said. "Some of them were heart-breaking but they were all genuine and about such amazing mums we felt we had to give something back to those who had taken the time to enter.”

The stories told of the amazing support that sons and daughters had received throughout their lives, through thick and thin, and while all this was true of one particular story, according to Mark it stood out for very difference reasons also.

“We had to pick a main winner and this one told of a super mum who was taken to London by her daughter and who ended up buying a turnip there for 10p because it was a bargain and taking it to the theatre with her," said Mark. "When the man on the door searched her bag and found it, she offered to make him a pasty and send it up from Cornwall.”

As the main winner of the competition, Truro-based Claire Varker celebrated with a free, Champagne Super Mum Supper alongside her mum Lou and the family on Mothers’ Day, after which the rest of the entries were put back in the hat and an extra 12 names were pulled out to make up the numbers for an even more special Super Mum Supper.

The mums, alongside their ‘Muminees’ will now all be treated to a complimentary two-course meal at the Victoria Inn on May 8, with Prosecco thrown in to wash down the pub grub.

The Vic Inn’s Holli Pike, who welcomed Clare and Lou on Mother’s Day, said, “We just felt there were too many amazing stories out there to give way one prize, so this is our way of saying thank-you to all of those amazing mums out there and giving something back to them.”
