Stopping for a tea break is fundamental to the perfect cricket match – so much so, it’s the only sport to have it written into the official laws.

Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream, in association with Cornwall Cricket, is celebrating this time-old tradition by inviting all 70 clubs in the region to compete for its coveted Afternoon Tea Cup for the first time.

Two finalists will be chosen – one from the east and another from the west of Cornwall. On July 19, during the tea break of the Edwards Cup Final at Truro Cricket Club, the finalists will be asked to produce a sample of their most impressive cricket tea offerings, to be judged by representatives from Cornwall Cricket and Rodda’s. The winner will be awarded the Rodda’s Afternoon Tea Cup for their club.

Managing director, Nicholas Rodda, said: “Cucumber sandwiches and, of course, cream teas are as much a part of a cricket match as players’ whites. At Rodda’s we are delighted to have the opportunity to join forces with Cornwall’s cricket community, to celebrate the combination of two historical past-times.

“For us, this new cup is about recognising the vital role of the small army of dedicated volunteers who take such pride in keeping the cream teas flowing through the cricket season, come rain or shine; highlighting their importance in keeping this wonderful cricket tradition alive for generations to come.”

Simon Menneer, of Cornwall Cricket, added: “We are delighted to partner with Rodda’s in this way. We are always so grateful for the hard work that goes into the afternoon cricket tea which is met with such expectation. This is a fun way to show our appreciation and thanks to the teams behind the cricket teas. We are delighted that Rodda’s are leading the way in this.”

To be in with a chance to win the contest, Rodda’s has asked Cornish cricketers and supporters to take a photograph of their half-time cricket tea and to tweet it, using the hashtag #RoddasAfternoonTeaCup and tagging @Roddas_Cream and @cornwallcricket. Finalists will be announced on July 3. For additional information, visit roddas.co.uk/afternoonteacup/.
