A hand-blown decanter that was in 1901 presented to the headmaster of Penzance School of Art, Mr H M Geoffroi, has now been donated to Penwith College.

The beautiful item was donated to the college by Keith Allen, from Praa Sands, who bought it from an auction at David Lays auction house.

Keith donated it to the college and suggested that it be used as a prize for an end of year award, and said: “It is now in its rightful home.”

In keeping with the Penzance School of Art link, the Geoffroi Prize will now be awarded to a student who attends a part time art course through the college that is taught at Penzance School of Art.

Many subjects are taught each week across a broad spectrum of the creative sector, including jewellery, pottery, stained glass, drawing, painting, pottery and sculpture.

The first prize giving will take place on Tuesday June 20 at the private view of the end-of-year art exhibition, this year entitled Tidal Memories.

The show is open to the public from June 21 to 25, and showcases artwork from both part time students and full time Penwith College students up to degree level.
