Jodie Greatorex from Truro and Penwith College stole the show at this year’s Cornish Skills Challenge.

Over 200 entrants from colleges and salons across the county created fairy-tale inspired looks to compete for a Cornish Skills medal and a chance to prepare for national competitions.

There were four categories in the competition: hairdressing, media make-up, nails and beauty therapy - each judged by industry experts.

After analysing their work, the judging panel then made the tough decision of who went home with the trophy (or beauty hamper, in this case).

The competitors were given set times throughout the day to complete their models’ fairytale themed look.

Jodie, Truro-based beauty student took home the gold in the beauty L3 competition. She said: “Cornish Skills 2018 has been the first time I have been able to really showcase the skills and techniques I’ve gained from studying beauty therapy level three and I have really enjoyed the challenge. In the weeks leading up to the event, I have been practicing at home and looking forward to the event.

“To have actually won took me completely by surprise and I still can’t believe it. Being recognised has given me an incredible confidence boost and I’m really looking forward to what the future holds for me once I qualify.”

All the stylists' hard work was rewarded in the evening, with the competitors’ models strutting down a catwalk in front of 300 guests.

The winners were presented with their awards by Cheryl Mewton, director of studies at Truro and Penwith College.

Hayley McKinstry, project team leader for hair, beauty, complementary therapies and catering at Truro and Penwith College, said: “Cornish Skills 2018 was a fantastic event that showcased the skills and talents of our upcoming professionals in hairdressing and beauty therapy.

“The event gives the students a chance to be creative and produce looks that they would not otherwise be given the opportunity to do. Competition is key in the hair and beauty industry and it is events that this that give the students the chance to excel.”
