Truro School has once again come away from the annual Cornwall Music Festival with a haul of trophies and medals.

The event, held in Truro Methodist Church, incorporates all styles of music as well as spoken word and features both adults and young people from around the county.

Pupils of all ages from both Truro School and Truro Prep School competed against others in a range of solo and group classes, achieving high marks throughout.

Around 150 students from Truro School participated in the festival and managed to secure over 25 medals and trophies.

Fred Bareham was one of the most successful students of the week leaving with an impressive score of 92. As a music scholar at Truro School, Fred has continued to impress with his talents and performed the Finzi clarinet concerto with style during the grade eight-plus woodwind class.

Francis Shepherd, Truro School’s music coordinator, said: “It was a delight to experience the wealth of musical talent at the school being demonstrated at this year’s music festival, and I greatly enjoyed hearing students perform, all of them clearly proud to represent the school.”

In the younger age categories, Truro Prep School entered more classes than ever before with five different groups and over 60 children taking part.

The local Prep School’s year five and six pupils clinched the Junior School Choir trophy early in the week with their performances of The Chimpanzee and Icarus, which included a solo from year five pupil Elsie.

The adjudicator was full of praise for the group saying: “A really committed performance of both songs making the most of the musical potential in them and showing great commitment and focus throughout.”

There is talent in the ranks at Truro Prep with the year three and four choir also claiming victory, this time in the Junior School Choirs – 30 singers and under category.

The newly formed group of year three and four singers impressed the judges with their lyrical song entitled The Moon. They sang in two parts, creating an exciting challenge for the new choristers. The adjudicator said: “Impressive to sing in two parts at this young age.”

Other classes that Truro Prep School participated in included, voices with instruments, boys' choirs age 14 and under and junior school choirs own choice pieces.

Angela Renshaw, head of music at Truro Prep School, said: “This was such a tremendous two days for so many children from the school, all of whom shone in their performance. Our performances were all of a very high standard and very musically delivered.

“I am thrilled that we could share this with both our parent supporters, and with the wider community of schools and members of public.”

Ms Renshaw also managed to secure her own award for the week, taking away the title of Most Inspiring Conductor.
