Councils take over parking enforcement

Parking enforcement was officially taken over by councils today.

Cornwall county council has worked with district councils to take over the work of the county's previous traffic wardens.

Uniformed civilian enforcement officers will issue £50 or £70 fines, depending on the offence.

Carrick district council, based in Truro, has been working with the county council and Restormel district council to develop the new system.

The Carrick district will carry out enforcement on the streets and car parks, and will process the notices that it issues, plus those that are issued by county council officers in the district.

The county council will carry out on-street enforcement in the remaining areas, including Kerrier, but will not deal with car parks.

Matt McTaggart, from Cornwall county council's strategic planning and transport department, said the public would see a "well trained and dedicated team" who would provide enforcement to a consistent standard.

"Motorists will be treated equally and fairly, it is only those that abuse the parking restrictions that have anything to worry about," he added.
