A teenager from Truro has reached the South West final of the Year in Industry awards.
Former Truro School student Andrew Cooke, 19, impressed judges with his 12-month placement at Truro-based Pall Corporation, a filtration and fluids management company.
The Year in Industry is run by EDT, a charity that encourages students to start careers in science, engineering and technology by finding posts for post-A Level students and undergraduates with businesses.
Andrew’s work involved proving the concept for a new resin-curing machine, taking the project from design stage through to testing.
After his time in the industry he will now go to Cardiff University to study mechanical engineering.
Year in Industry judge Malcolm Pemble, who is operations manager for the South West Region of EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, said: “Year in Industry provides bright young people such as Andrew with an insight into science and technology-based manufacturing and offers them the opportunity to gain experience while making a tangible contribution to their employers.
“Shortages of graduates in some key skills areas make this scheme extremely valuable to companies – not only in the short term but by encouraging young people back into industry after they graduate.”
Andrew will be among six finalists competing for the regional award at the ceremony held at the University of the West of England next Wednesday, July 8.
