Truro school hosts joint sports day

Teamwork and determination was on display at Richard Lander’s inter area resource base (ARB) sports day in Truro.

Pupils between the ages of five and 14 came from the ARB classes at Trevithick Primarty, Penryn Junior, Tregolls and Pencalenick schools, alongside students from Richard Lander’s own ARB.

ARBs are specialist units within mainstream schools designed for children who need greater levels of individual support and care. The sports day gave pupils a series of challenges with the emphasis on co-operation and problem solving.

The children were divided into five mixed-age groups, captained by a team leader from Richard Lander ARB and supported by tear ten students. Each team followed a set route around ten activities, with the most popular activity proving to be a timed “water pillar,” where competitors filled a cylinder with water while workiing together to prevent water leaking out of numerous holes.

A “target game” involved the teams throwing Velcro balls onto a large numbered score board to collect as many points as possible, and a “parachute game” asked students to rely on their team’s help to navigate their way under a multi-coloured parachute.

It was the yellow team who triumphed with the most points at the end, although all competitors were rewarded with a well-deserved picnic lunch for their efforts.

Richard Lander ARB teacher Danielle Beattie said: “The event was tremendous fun for all involved. The day has enabled the children to recognise each other’s strengths and demonstrated the power of teamwork in overcoming individual difficulties.” The day was organised by Richard Lander PE teacher Anita Jacobs and the school’s year ten students were also thanked alongside Steve Hillman from Cornwall Disability for providing the equipment for some of the activities.
