Urgent action has had to be taken over rowdy, drunken behaviour in Newquay as the peak holiday season approches.
In the past few weeks there has been a large number of complaints about groups of people “engaging in anti-social behaviour” during and after organised pub and club crawls in the town.
They have upset ordinary people going about their everyday business and visitors to the town. All fear it could get worse if something is not done immediately.
Partner agencies in the town have now taken action to address the concerns of residents and visitors alike. Cornwall Council together with police have clamped down on unlicensed street trading in the town, including the selling of tickets and wristbands for the pub and club crawls although the power does not exist to stop such sales from taking place on private property.
The local licensing officers together with Cornwall Council’s Newquay town centre manager have met with representatives of NALP (Newquay Association of Licensed Premises) to ask them to remind their members who are part of the crawls of their overall duty of care towards the town. NALP has reassured the partners that they are working with their members to this end.
The council and police have also had meetings with the companies organising the crawls with regard to the issues that have been raised and they have given their assurances that they will change their method of operation and discourage any perceived anti-social behaviour.
It is recognised that visitors to the town do have an impact on the local residents own enjoyment of the area and all partners are committed to working together to reduce this and to listen to community concerns.
