Truro School closed its school year with its annual Speech Day on Friday.
An audience of about 1,500 parents, staff friends, governors and pupils gathered in a specially erected marquee on the playing fields in glorious summer weather to see prizes distributed to pupils of all ages.
Guest of Honour was Rev Ron Crewes, who is retiring this month from Chairing the Board of Governors after three years.
Headmaster Paul Smith referred to his “passion for his old school, which knows no bounds. His battle against-life threatening illness has been inspirational and I would like to thank him personally for his support, guidance and vision. He retires from the Chairmanship this year but will remain on the Board where his wise counsel will be invaluable.”
Taking over the leadership of the school’s Governors will be retired local businessman Geoff Rumbles, who has been on the board for over 15 years.
Prizes were presented by two long-serving teachers who are also retiring from the school, Paul Collenette and Colin Blake.
Four distinguished young sportsmen and women who have gained international recognition or honours this year received praise. Noah Rogerson was crowned the English fencing champion at under 13 and 14 level and Alice Maidwell- Smith gained a silver medal in her age group in fencing. Jack Carr has been selected for the Welsh Hockey squad and Henry Conchie played twice for England in the Under16 rugby team.”
Six teachers are leaving the school. Gill Cooper (Chemistry Department), Victoria Vyvyan (English and Drama), Anneli Ward (German), Colin Blake (Biology and Head of the Sixth Form), Rosemary Collenette (Geography and Housemistress of the girls boarding house Malvern and Pentreve) and Paul Collenette (Head of Geography and Geology and Year 11).
Music for the ceremony was provided by leavers Harriet Hougham-Slade, Charlie Murray, Claire Powers, Jack Vosper and Lucy Cotton, with 5th Former Ben Comeau accompanying and Senior Prefects Frances Harris and Oliver Lobb each gave a speech proposing a vote of thanks.
