Teenagers from Truro’s Penair School took part in a world of work (or WOW) day at the Bike Barn in Porthreath, as part of an “employability qualification.”
The day, which was organised by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership, was designed to give students an opportunity to discover the inner workings of businesses through meeting entrepreneur Roger Knight and joining in with some hands-on activities.
The ten year ten students learned about what skills increase employability, and took part in individual mock job interviews.
Roger Knight, owner of Bike Barn, said: “We were thrilled to host the students at the Bike Barn. It was great to have the chance to introduce them to the work that we do and hopefully inspire them”.
The day showed the importance of knowing your stuff when it came to interviews, and showed teenagers that finding work and attending interviews was not as daunting as they first seem.
Kate Whetter, education projects manager at Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership, said: “Taking learning outside the classroom and in to the workplace has been very worthwhile for the young people, and their work related knowledge and confidence really grew as the day progressed”.
Neil Hoyland, who teaches employability at the school, thanked the business for getting involved and the students for their hard work.
“The time, care and patience that Roger Knight and his staff gave to us during the day was fantastic. I’m very proud of the way in which our students approached the experience,” he added.
