MABE:
CHURCH: This week Father John reminded folk that the church's New Year starts on Advent - Sunday, December 2. On that day there will be a service of Holy Communion (from the Book of Common Prayer) at 8.30am at St Laudus; and a Parish Eucharist at St Michael's, Ponsanooth, at 11.15am. There will be no 9.30am service at St Laudus. Instead the church will commence its period of Advent worship with the annual candlelit Christingle Service at 6pm. This popular service is a wonderful way to mark the beginning of Advent. The service will be followed by refreshments.
On Thursday, December 6, at 6.30pm, the local Brownies, along with members of the church and friends from the village, will witness the switching on of the village's Christmas tree. This year the tree will be situated in the garden of Jill and Richard Clayton in Antron Hill, just opposite Antron Manor. Fr John will be there and a few carols will be sung.
On December 9, at 6pm, the Mabe Youth and Community Project will host its Carols for Christmas in Mabe Community Hall. The project's Christmas raffle will be drawn after the service where the village gets together to celebrate the Christmas season in words and song.
The next service for people's diaries, is a Service of Lessons and Carols at 7pm at St Michael's Church, Ponsanooth, on Thursday, December 20. The same evening will see Mabe Brownies entertaining the residents of Antron Manor.
On Sunday, December 23, there will be a service of Morning Prayer at St Laudus at 9.30am and Matins at St Michael's at 11.15am, both services providing an "oasis of calm", as the busyness of the Christmas celebrations and preparations reach their climax.
The traditional Midnight Masses at both churches commence at 11.30pm, and there are services on Christmas Day at 9.30am (St Laudus) and 11.15am (St Michael's).
Looking ahead into 2008, there will be an Epiphany Carol Service on January 6 - a last opportunity for folk to sing some of their favourite carols - at 10.30am at St Laudus Church, followed by a pot luck lunch.
It goes without saying that everyone is most warmly welcome to all these events and services.
